QLD Theatre Company – Design & Construction of a new Workshop

This cavernous space consists of a steel portal frame structure enclosed by aerated concrete panels, and a reinforced concrete floor suspended over a ground floor carpark. Translucent panels in steel sheeting and large retractable doors provide abundant natural light and ventilation. Paynter Dixon overcame the constraints of a tight urban site compounded by overhead power cables by selecting lightweight building materials that were easy to handle and quick to erect. Not only was construction fast-tracked but the reduction in loads eliminated the need for costly materials to reinforce the buildings structure.

The workshop may be accessed from the street and the Queensland Theatre Companys adjoining headquarters which was previously built by Paynter Dixon Queensland.
