Rio Tinto Alcan, Weipa - Awonga Point Waste Water Treatment Plant

Augmentation of the plant was commissioned to cater for population growth (i.e. increase capacity to 4,000 EP) and improve effluent quality to fulfil existing and likely future licensing obligations.

Paynter Dixon Queensland managed design risks through a comprehensive HAZOP process that was undertaken at both the functional and detailed design stages.

Key outcomes of this process included development of an innovative design solution involving plant construction within the existing lagoon walls, designed to take advantage of the pre-loading of the soils beneath the lagoon walls and mitigate settlement risk.

Another key outcome was the revision of the concept design from an activated sludge treatment plant to a membrane bio-reactor (MBR) treatment plant.
